The subject of hell is one that stirs the heart with both solemnity and urgency. It is not a topic the Bible dwells on with relish, but with sober warning, for it speaks of a reality as real as the love that sent Christ to the cross. Hell is the place of separation from God’s presence, a state of everlasting punishment reserved for those who reject His mercy. It is not a creation of cruelty, but the necessary consequence of rejecting the One who is Life itself. The Scriptures do not describe it with glee, but with tears, as a place of torment from which there is no escape, where the worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched — a fire that never shall be quenched — Mark 9:44.
Yet even in this darkness, we see the mercy of God shining through. For hell is not His desire for any soul. The same God who warns of hell is the One who sent His Son to bear its weight in our place. He does not delight in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live — Ezekiel 33:11. The rich man in torment cried out for mercy, but it was too late — Luke 16:24. That is why the Gospel is called the "good news" — because it offers a way out, a path to life, before it is too late.
To speak of hell is to speak of the gravity of sin and the holiness of God. It is to say that evil is not a trifle, not a mistake to be overlooked, but a rebellion that demands justice. Yet even in this, we see the depth of God’s love — that He would rather suffer the agony of the cross than see one soul perish. The fire of hell is real, but the love of God is realer still. And so we are called to flee to the cross, to cling to the mercy offered there, before the door is shut and the time of grace is over.
