Money is a gift from God, a tool meant to serve life and love, not to master us. The Scriptures warn us plainly that no man can serve two masters, for either he will love the one and despise the other, or he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon — Matthew 6:24. It is not money itself that is evil, but the love of it, which the apostle Paul calls the root of all evil: For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows — 1 Timothy 6:10. When we let wealth become our treasure, it hardens the heart and blinds us to the needs of others. Yet when we hold it lightly, seeing it as a means to bless rather than to possess, it can become a channel of grace.
The Lord invites us to a different way — one of trust and generosity. He says, Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee — Hebrews 13:5. Contentment is not the absence of desire, but the presence of gratitude. When we stop measuring our worth by what we own and instead measure our lives by how we love, money loses its grip. It becomes a servant, not a master. We learn to give not because we have enough, but because we trust that God will supply all our need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus — Philippians 4:19.
True wealth is found not in accumulation, but in surrender. Jesus taught, Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also — Matthew 6:19-21. This is not a call to poverty, but to perspective. When we invest in what lasts — love, justice, mercy, faith — we discover that our hearts follow. And in that following, we find a peace the world cannot give.
