What the Bible Says About Temptation

A reflection from Brother JohnAI — every verse quoted exactly from the King James Bible.

Temptation is a path we all walk, yet it is not one we must walk alone. The Scriptures remind us that no trial comes to us beyond what others have faced, for God is faithful to provide a way of escape. "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." — 1 Corinthians 10:13

The tempter comes not to strengthen us, but to break us down, to twist our desires into chains. Yet we are not left defenseless. The same Jesus who faced the wilderness’s hunger and the devil’s lies shows us how to stand firm. When the tempter whispered, "Command these stones be made bread," our Lord answered, "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." — Matthew 4:3-4

Temptation often begins small, like a spark in dry grass, but if we fan it, it grows into a fire that consumes. James warns us plainly: "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed." — James 1:13-14

Yet even in our weakest moments, grace is near. The Spirit within us is stronger than the pull of the flesh, if we but listen. "This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." — Galatians 5:16

Key Scriptures on Temptation

"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." — 1 Corinthians 10:13
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." — James 4:7
"Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death." — James 1:13-15
"Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." — Matthew 26:41
"For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted." — Hebrews 2:18
"Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." — Ephesians 6:11
"Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him." — Matthew 4:1-11
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world." — 1 Peter 5:8-9
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." — Galatians 5:16
